Including a handy guide to Equity Allies for undecided voters.

As early voting winds down, decided voters have cast ballots in record numbers across the country. In Central Texas, numbers are already eclipsing the total vote counts in 2016 and 2018.

One thing is certain: Change is coming.

When the dust settles, Texas politics may be identified as newly blue, still but less red, or deep purple. Regardless, the results — and we — will be judged by our ability to work together to mend our communities and fulfill a new mandate for sustained, equitable governance.

We’re already seeing a new voter expectation that policymakers move beyond political division to rebalance policies and institutional priorities while ensuring all citizens have a voice and a role in a post-COVID economy that considers the cultural, workforce, healthcare, and climate crises that remain before us.

I encourage those of you who haven’t yet voted or made up your mind to assess your options with the same expectation. Which candidate has the most to gain by reconciling the rifts in our communities? Which candidate benefits from more of the same?

As a starting point, below is a list of candidates (assembled by Black Austin Democrats) committed to delivering a more balanced future. As a candidate for Pflugerville City Council, I am honored to be included on this list. I’m not suggesting that all these candidates are right for everyone, but this diverse list does share my commitment to move beyond politics as usual to deliver a more equitable future for all Central Texans.

In a recent post (Leadership Isn’t About Them. It’s About Us.), I wrote that “for us to emerge from this crisis, we need leaders who can overcome generations of physical and cultural barriers and long-standing regional expectations of have and have not.”

I am confident a new majority of Texans stand ready to help lead this effort.
